As close to native Hawaii as you can get, Kauai’s West Coast is a nature lover’s dream. This side of the island is most famous for Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the 100s of miles of trails showcasing native plants and wildlife. To the northern edge of this region is Koke’e State Park, a high-elevation 4,000-acre park that rewards visitors with panoramic views of the cliffs and valleys of the Napali Coast. The southwest is fairly remote and much drier than the northwest which is a mix of wet and dry. However, all the small towns in West Kauai are located here. The drive along Highway 550 from Koke’e to Waimea will wind its way through Kauai’s mountainous and scenic terrain before finishing in this small coastal village.
Due to the rugged terrain on Kauai’s West Side, the majority of available real estate is concentrated near the towns of Waimea and Kekaha. Highway 550 meets Kaumualii Highway on the coast of Waimea. From there west or east will take you through various sleepy towns with a range of beaches and small parks available to enjoy. The real estate you will find along the Kaumualii Highway is made up of mostly small suburban subdivisions with single-family homes and undeveloped lots available.
The 96796 zip code makes up the stretch from Highway 550 down to Waimea where it is bordered by 96752 and the town of Kekaha to the west and the mostly rural, unincorporated community of Hanapepe in the 96716 zip code to the east.
