The last town along Kauai’s main highway, if you are headed west, is Kekaha. Driving along this rural stretch, one sees golden fields sprinkled with rolling hills that were one once part of sugar plantation land. Homes in the residential community typically reflect the plantation era in construction and design.
The west side of the island is typically sunny, dry, and windy which lends well to picnics and sunbathing on the longest stretch of white sandy beach in the state. Kekaha Beach Park is the westernmost lifeguarded beach. It’s a local favorite for sunsets, with Hawaii’s forbidden island, Niihau, in clear view on the horizon.
Polihale state park draws visitors and locals to its pristine sandy shores, which are set against large sand dunes and mountains. Campsites and large pavilions make is a favorite weekend getaway spot.
Kekaha’s eastern neighbor Waimea Town is less than ten minutes away - so shopping, dining, and schools are easily accessible. Sometimes called the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, Waimea Canyon is almost in Kekaha’s backyard. The West side of Kauai is rich in hunting, fishing, and ranching culture, and is loved by locals for it natural, untouched quality.
