Waipahu is an area of Oahu that's been more recently developed. Beginning in the 1970s, as Hawaii sugar plantations began to close down, this area north of Pearl Harbor began to be converted into residential communities. Waipahu encompasses several neighborhoods and one of the largest of these is Waikele, much of which was developed in the 1990s.
Waipahu also encompasses Royal Kunia, Harbor View (known for its views of nearby Pearl Harbor and far-off views of Diamond Head) and Kunia. Waikele single-family homes and condos were built on land where the last remaining plantations once thrived. Many Waikele homes and complexes are built around the beautiful fairways of Waikele Country Club (a public course) and conveniently located near Waikele Outlet Malls and Waikele Shopping Center.
In addition to conveniences, you'll get lots of mature, beautiful trees along the golf course and throughout Waikele. Due to its later development, Waipahu features buried utilities, keeping the beautiful view planes open and unencumbered by power poles and lines. Some elevation provides lovely breezes, too. Though Waikele is known primarily for its townhomes, you'll also find single-family homes in Waipahu, especially in Royal Kunia, where you'll find many 3 to 5 bedroom, upscale homes.
Due to its location close to Central Oahu and the island's major thoroughfares (including H1, H2 and Hwy. 99), Waipahu and its many neighborhoods offer easy access to downtown, Waikiki, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the North Shore. Residents enjoy quick commutes at a somewhat less expensive price point than you'll find in many more coastal areas. Waipahu, Waikele and Royal Kunia feature lots of green spaces and parks, including Oahu's largest public park. Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park includes 20 tennis courts plus plenty of walking paths, sports fields and playgrounds. The park spans a square kilometer, and is home to the Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.
