The Hāmākua Coast is an incredibly scenic stretch of coastline that runs 50 miles north from Hilo, on the northeastern side of Hawaii's Big Island. It's one of the most beautiful places to buy a home in Hawai‘i. The area benefits from cooling tradewinds and regular rainfall, making it one of the most green and lush regions of Hawaii, with plenty of tropical foliage and farmlands growing everything from taro, macadamia nuts, and Hamakua mushrooms to sweet potatoes, and more. At its northernmost point is Waimea (known locally as Kamuela) and to the south is Hilo and Akaka Falls. In between, the coastline is marked by dramatic cliffs, charming small towns, and tons of natural beauty. Hāmākua Coast real estate consists mostly of single-family homes for sale, as well as land parcels, agricultural land, and development opportunities. There are very few condos or townhomes in this area. You can purchase a Hamakua Coast property on one of the many bluffs near Waimea and Waipi‘o, in former plantation towns like Honoka‘a, Āhualoa, or Pa'auilo.
Hamakua Coast homes for sale further to the south, in towns like Papa'aloa, Hakalau, Honomu, and Laupāhoehoe, will be at lower elevations, closer to the water's edge, and nearer to Akaka Falls and Hilo town. With fertile soils and plenty of rainfall, there are opportunities for personal farming or commercial growing along the Hamakua Coast, where residents enjoy a slower pace of life in a relatively rural setting.
