Papaikou is a plantation village just five miles north of Hilo. Spanning 1.4 miles along the Hamakua Coast, the region holds an abundance of rich agricultural soils and forest groves. Much of Papaikou’s community is situated along Hawaii Route 19, as well as parts of the Old Mamalahoa historic highway, a scenic byway preserved in time. This region is home to lush tropical rainforest, dazzling sunrises, and the rich heritage of the sugar cane plantation era. Many of the colorful homes are plantation-style one-story buildings, simple and spacious in design. A community bank, post office, and store are nestled between residences, and Hilo is easily accessible a few minutes’ drive away.
Honolii, one of Hilo’s prized surfing beaches, is a five-minute drive south. The awe-inspiring sunrise views from this beach are arguably among the best on the island. The land around Papaikou gently slopes towards the base of Mauna Kea. Papaikou’s climate is rainforest, with frequent rainfall and plentiful sun throughout the year. The average yearly precipitation is 146.4 inches and average temperatures range from the mid 70’s to low 80’s Fahrenheit.
