Waiohinu resides near the southernmost point of the Big Island, and the United States in fact. It includes homes along Mamalahoa Highway and adjoining roadways, just west of Naalehu and north of Discovery Harbor. Waiohinu was a historic Hawaiian community, then a sugar cane plantation town, and as the sugar cane industry left the island it became a quiet neighborhood.
One of the wonderful things about communities who share the history of the sugar cane industry is the strong sense of community and connection between families who have resided in the area for generations.
Residents appreciate Waiohinu for the easy country lifestyle it affords. Its close enough to everyday amenities in Naalehu and Ocean View, and Keaau is about an hour and a half away when needed. Kailua-Kona is about 60 miles away following Mamalahoa Highway. There is also a farmers’ market near Waiohinu Park.
You’ll find both established Hawaiian planation-era homes and newer houses in the neighborhood, set along the road and beyond the tree line. One thing is for sure, the level of privacy and peace is hard to beat.
