The more humid stretch of coast on the Western side of the Big Island is South Kona. Extending from southward from the central town of Kona all the way to Manuka Park (Kau), South Kona is different in both climate and topography when compared to its golf course-laden counterpart to the North.
South Kona is known more for its plethora of diverse landscapes, historic landmarks, and countercultural shops and galleries. Its humid climate is what supports the lush forests and the farmers who cultivate Kona coffee in the volcanic soil. To this day, South Kona remains quieter, more agrarian, and less populated than North Kona. Small towns and less developed plots decorate the landscape.
Despite its more rural roots, the towns of Kealakekua, Captain Cook and Milolii remain the more populous neighborhoods in South Kona’s 96704 zip code. Captain Cook real estate is populated by single-family homes with much larger lots and landscape suitable for growing food crops in the rich volcanic soil. Kealakekua continues to develop its residential community situated on Jack Nicklaus Signature Design golf course, The Club at Hokuli'a.
