The region of Captain Cook lies nestled between the towns of Kealakekua to the north and Honaunau to the south along Hawaii’s sun-soaked western coastline. Small shops and a grocery store provide amenities to the community of homes built along the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A short drive through this scenic stretch of Highway 11 connects to Kealakekua where groceries and gas stations are also available.
This region lies directly inland above the serene shores of Kealakekua Bay. Ocean activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving are popular in the calm, turquoise waters of the bay. Prominent coffee plantations such as Greenwell Farms and Kona Coffee Living Historic Farm stretch along the forested hillsides, offering a sample of world-class coffees and a peek at life on a working farm. Captain Cook is roughly 12.9 square miles in area and largely forested. Coffee growing is ideal in the region given that the hillside elevation is between 800 and 1200 feet. The region is connected to Kailua-Kona 12 miles to the north.
