About – Lanai was once the top pineapple producing region in the world, supplying over 75% of the world’s pineapples. The island’s only town, Lanai City, was built to support the pineapple plantations that once covered the island. In 1992 Dole ended its pineapple production on the island, and Del Monte followed suit in 2008, signaling the end of an era. 98% of the island is now owned by Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle Corporation, and 2% is owned by the State of Hawaii. Lanai spans 140 square miles and is 18-miles across at its widest point. Rain falls year-round in the central highlands around Lanai City, averaging 27.5 inches per year. The climate here is generally warm and dry and the island does not receive as much rainfall as many of the other islands.
What you’ll Find – Lanai embraces a quiet, simple, community-centered way of living. Stay long enough and you will get to know your neighbors quite well. Golden sands, peaceful breezes, and serene landscapes abound in Hawaii’s 6th largest island. There are three main areas in Lanai. Manele Bay sits along the southern coastline, home to Lanai Four Seasons. Lanai City is nestled in the tall pines of the central highlands, the island’s only town and home to its only schools and hospital. Finally, there’s Koele just northeast of town and home to Sensei Lanai Four Seasons Resort. A 2-lane road connects Lanai City to the Lanai Airport and Manele Bay.
Lifestyle – Lanai calls to those seeking the ultimate slow-paced lifestyle and small-town feel. There are no big box stores or shopping centers here. With just over 3,000 inhabitants, it’s easy to feel at home as part of the community.
Amenities – There is a single airport for inter-island flights and a single boat harbor on Lanai. A regularly scheduled ferry connects the island to Maui by way of Lahaina. There is a market, a handful of eateries, and local businesses in Lanai City. The town holds a community pool, community garden, and a cultural center. Manele Bay and the Four Seasons Resort boast fine dining restaurants and farm to table fare, and a Jack Nicklaus designed signature golf course overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
