Lanai City sits above Manele Bay and Manele Bay small boat harbor. Take a 20-minute drive from the southern coast and you will soon reach Lanai’s only town located in the island’s central highlands. The town is 3 miles from Lanai Airport for quick inter-island flights.
Lanai City was built in the early 1900’s to support the island’s booming pineapple plantations that once made up over 70% of the world’s pineapple production. The industry has since dwindled in size, but residents still celebrate the town’s heritage with the annual Pineapple Festival.
While much of the island is open land, towering pine trees shade the streets of Lanai City. The quiet community offers indoor and outdoor activities for residents including Lanai Cultural and Heritage Center, a community pool, community garden, and hiking trails. The Lanai Cat Sanctuary is located near the airport and open to visitors. Richard’s Market, Lanai Hardware and Lumber, and several little shops and eateries are located around town. Lanai City’s two hotels are Hotel Lanai and Sensei Lanai Four Seasons Resort. Dole Park sits in the middle of town and is a popular picnic area. Single-family homes are situated along quiet residential streets throughout town.
