The historic town of Wailuku is set on the slope between Kahului to the southeast and Waihee-Waiehu to the northwest. Remnants of the town’s rich past, from ancient Hawaii to sugar cane plantation days, can be found throughout the region.
Wailuku holds residential and commercial neighborhoods spanning from the foothills of the West Maui Mountains, past downtown, and to the Pacific Ocean. At the base of the mountains is Iao Valley State Park. This 4,000-acre nature retreat and historic point of interest holds walking and hiking trails and is just 3 miles from downtown Wailuku.
The town was once a popular tourist destination before the rise of neighboring resort communities. It has served as Maui’s County seat since 1905 and the booming days of the sugar cane plantations. Since the 1960’s the area has quieted down into a quaint and friendly town, reflective of a bygone era. The downtown streets of local restaurants, boutiques, bars, and businesses shaded by ancient Monkeypod trees are quite walkable.
Past downtown are neighborhoods of charming Hawaii plantation-era homes. As you head further inland the established neighborhoods give way to island style homes and duplexes.
