Kaimuki is a highly desirable neighborhood in Honolulu, located on the mauka (or mountain) side of Diamond Head Crater. Charming, plantation-style, single-family homes on modestly sized lots characterize this neighborhood, but you can also find townhomes, condos, and high-rise apartments for sale here. Kaimuki was Honolulu’s first major subdivision and was developed mostly before the 1940s.
Kapahulu Avenue borders Kaimuki to the west, and the exclusive Kahala neighborhood is located to the east. Waialae Avenue marks the northern border of Kaimuki, and alone with Kapahulu Avenue, it makes up Kaimuki’s business district, with its many shops, restaurants, and services. Increasingly, Waialae has become a foodie lovers’ haven packed with hip local eateries and talented chefs.
The Kaimuki area is also home to Oahu’s biggest and most popular farmer’s market at Kapiolani Community College grounds every Saturday morning. In addition to the college, there are two private Catholic schools in Kaimuki; Saint Louis, which is a preparatory school for boys and Sacred Hearts, a preparatory school for girls.
Alohea Ave is a residential street that borders Kaimuki to the south and west, and other perimeter streets include 6th Avenue, Kaimuki Avenue, Kilauea Avenue, and Luawai Street.
Kaimuki is giving way to new construction while many of the plantation-style homes have been restored, keeping some of their most charming features like Dickey roofs, while modernizing them. Kaimuki is a popular area for real estate in Honolulu, given its central location with easy access to Diamond Head, Waikiki, and downtown Honolulu.
Despite its proximity to the city, Kaimuki has managed to maintain its charming, small-town feel. Revitalized in the past decade or two, Kaimuki is in high demand for its charm, convenience, and proximity to local beaches and surf spots.
